J. Craig Gandy prays
at Texas State Capitol

Dear Tim,

We think it is time to bring our prayers before the throne of our Heavenly Father on the election of a true conservative Speaker of the state house. Perhaps you will join us in prayer from the comfort of your home or possibly you would consider coming to Austin on Sunday evening, January 9th, 2011, at 7:00 pm on the steps of our capitol building. We know that the hearts of our leaders can be changed not necessarily by the might or power of men but by God’s Spirit and that the heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord. Prayer is our best and most underused instrument. I would also encourage you to considering fasting.

We are going to meet on the south steps of our capitol building and parking is available both on the street as well as in a public parking garage due east of the capitol. Please bring your gloves, scarves, long johns and earmuffs (temps likely in the low 40s) and a flashlight or one of the battery powered candles for light (no candles per the capitol request) and join us in a chorus of prayer. If you think you might attend or will join us from your home, please reply to jrunnels@heritagealliance.com or you can RSVP on our Facebook page by clicking Events and then Prayer Vigil.

Why the concern? Didn’t conservatives win resoundingly? We did; however, the current speaker was elected last session by 65 Democrats and 11 Republicans. The Speaker is the most powerful person in our state. He will appoint chairmen for 34 standing committees for the upcoming legislative session. The Speaker also decides which committee will receive each of the estimated 5,000+ bills filed in the session. Committee chairmen, in turn, can decide which bills will be returned to the floor for a vote˜with or without the consensus of his committee.

In addition, in this session, district lines for Congress, state house members, and our state senators will be redrawn by the state house which will dramatically impact our state for good--or ill--for the next ten years. We cannot squander this great blessing God has given us by putting the reins in the hands of a leader who does not share our values.
