History and Legend:
The name is said to be derived from that of the river. Achates in Sicily. The greek philosopher Theophrastus (372-287 b.c.) described this gem as early as 300 b.c and in Byzantium people already knew how to enhance the color of agate by burning.
Since time immemorial agate has been used during pregnancy for both mother and child, alleviating the discomfort experienced on certain days during pregnancy. It is used to treat headaches, dizziness, and impaired balance as well as skin problems. It is important that the stone should be in contact with the skin near the organ that needs healing. When placed on the heart and/or throat chacra, it combats feverish infections. Tired or inflamed eyes may also be alleviated by applying a disk of agate to them.
Agate enables the wearer to choose between true friends and false ones. It is said to avert storms and lightning, protect children from danger, bring prosperity and prevent miscarriages.
Red agates are related to the solar plexus chacra; blue agates are associated with the throat chacra.
